SELLFOLD GUIDE
Ecommerce hero image checklist: make the product identifiable first
The first ecommerce image should let a shopper identify the exact product quickly. Use the real sellable variant, clear framing, readable detail and a composition that will survive the destination’s thumbnail crop. Save lifestyle, offer and supporting explanation for later frames when they answer a different question.
Show the exact item
Start with the version, colour, quantity and included contents a buyer receives. A visually attractive image that shows another configuration creates uncertainty instead of reducing it.
Test the thumbnail crop
A strong hero frame still works when small. Keep the product large enough to recognise, avoid clutter at the edges and check the actual destination preview rather than relying on a desktop master file.
Do not make the hero carry every message
A main image does not need to prove every benefit. Move scale, material, packaging and use context into later images so the first frame stays easy to understand.
Review against destination guidance
Marketplaces, stores and ads may have different requirements for main images and text. Check the current policy for the exact surface before uploading; a clear source image is not an approval guarantee.

Questions sellers ask
Should the first image be a lifestyle photo?
It can be, but only if the item remains immediately recognisable and the destination permits it. A clear identification image is usually the safer starting point.
Can I show props?
Use props only when they do not imply included contents, size, performance or features that are not true.
Does a better hero image guarantee conversion?
No. It can improve clarity, but demand, pricing, offer, trust and the rest of the page also matter.
