How to write an ecommerce product-image brief

By Sellfold · Reviewed August 15, 2026 · Educational guidance

A useful ecommerce image brief identifies the exact product, the buyer question each image should answer, the factual claim it may show, and the destination where it will appear. It should distinguish verified facts from creative direction, so the final reviewer can spot an unsupported visual or claim before it reaches a listing or ad.

Start with product facts, not adjectives

Record the sellable variant, included contents, material or feature evidence, dimensions where verified, current price or offer, and prohibited claims. This becomes the source of truth for every image and caption.

  1. Name the exact SKU or variant.
  2. List only verified benefits and included items.
  3. Mark facts that require legal, safety or platform review.

Give each image one buyer question

Assign a single job to each proposed frame: identify the item, show a material detail, communicate scale, clarify a variant, show truthful use context, or introduce one offer. A list of visual styles without a buyer question produces repetitive assets.

Separate destination from creative direction

A product-page gallery can carry deeper evaluation detail, while an ad needs a focused first impression. State the destination, aspect ratio needs, required factual copy and review owner, but do not assume that a generated file is automatically compliant.

Use the brief as a final-review checklist

Before publishing, compare the finished image and supporting copy with the product page, packaging and current destination guidance. Replace any invented accessory, altered feature, unsupported result or inaccurate price.

Questions sellers ask

Is a brief only for a designer?

No. It is also useful when a seller works alone or uses an AI tool because it makes the factual boundaries and image jobs explicit.

Should I include a promise such as ‘best quality’?

Only if you can substantiate it and it is appropriate for the destination. Prefer observable, verified product facts.

Can Sellfold use this brief?

Sellfold uses the product details and selected destination to create static asset directions and copy. Review every output before publishing.
