SELLFOLD GUIDE
How to plan Shopify product media without exposing private information
Plan Shopify product media as a small public library: clear product identification, relevant detail and variant views, plus any useful context. Upload only files intended for public store access, attach variants where this reduces confusion, and use descriptive alt text so the media is understandable beyond the image alone.
Treat product media as public storefront content
Shopify states that files uploaded to the Content > Files area should be intended for public access. Keep customer documents, supplier materials, private briefs and other sensitive files out of the product-media workflow.
Map media to product variants
When colour, material, size or configuration changes what a buyer receives, associate the relevant images with the matching variant. This reduces the risk that a shopper sees one option while selecting another.
Build a sequence, not a pile
Lead with an identification view, then add close detail, scale, use context or an included-component view when it clarifies the buying decision. Where your theme supports it, test how the gallery and thumbnail order appear on mobile.
Write useful alt text
Alt text should briefly identify the product and meaningful visible variation or detail. It is not a place to repeat promotional keywords, price claims or information that cannot be seen in the image.

Questions sellers ask
Are product-media files private?
No. Shopify says files in the product-media workflow should be intended for public access. Keep sensitive material elsewhere.
Should every variant have a distinct photo?
Use a distinct image when the visual difference matters to the buyer. Do not create artificial variation where the product is the same.
Does Sellfold edit Shopify products directly?
No. It creates downloadable static assets and copy for manual review and upload.
